Awesome + suck = eh.
I grew up with Oomingmak downtown in Anchorage. I never really paid attention to it until I was an adult, though. Qiviut is the softest, most luxurious yarn ever to come from an animal, it's like yarn made from happy dreams. The stuff is worth at least double its weight in gold. And at Oomingmak nice Yupik and Inupiaq ladies from all over Alaska knit beautiful stuff from qiviut. For some it's their primary source of income. Totally wow.

Unfortunately, as others here have pointed out, the price is shock-inducing. Qiviut is horrendously expensive (musk oxen aren't exactly a frequently farmed critter), and the work that goes into their products is fantastic. But only people with fantastic budgets can afford it. - James , posted 10/20/06

it's a freaking scarf
and really, who wants to wear anything made from musk ox - have you seen those things?! it's a furry cow or possibly a small woolly mammoth with no trunk. a woolly mammoth scarf would be awesome tho' - , posted 10/20/06

beautiful stuff, but YIKES on the price!
The products in this store are undoubtedly beautiful, finely crafted, and created with love. But who can afford a $200 knit cap or a $150 scarf?? It's way too expensive. Shop only if your pockets are deep, or if your main intent is to donate money to this organization. - magpie , posted 10/20/06

hand crafted wares
Store has amazing hand-crafted pieces by villagers from a remote village in Alaska who run this cooperative. Most of the objects they sell are meant to be worn, and made from the fur of the Arctic Musk Ox. - Ruthy , posted 12/12/05
