My first sushi experience, but I've moved on.
I do like the place, and especially that salad (best of any sushi place), but the last time I went it took an hour and a half to get all of the food for our table. The excuse was that there was a table of ten on the other side. Our table had eight and we had measures of time when we actually felt ignored. I had to leave the table and get sushi order forms from the bar myself.

I also like roll-style sushi, and the more traditional Yamato Ya has a limited selection of rolls, focusing more on pairs. What they do have is very good and fresh, though. - , posted 01/22/07

Excellent sushi, fair prices, but have time to spare
Yamato Ya used to be my #1 all-time go-there-3-times-a-week favorite restaurant in Anchorage. Yamamto Ya literally changed my life (that's where I saw the poster for the JET Program, inspiring me to teach English in Japan for a year). The sushi is still very good, and Taku-san, the sushi chef from Okinawa is AWESOME. However the prices have gone up with the new owners and a sushi combo is $14.50... I remember when it was $11.95, sonny! Sushi can take a while when the chef gets backed up... we waited for 45 minutes and the place wasn't even full. That said, it's still one of the best sushi places in town, and $14.50 is not that bad. The genmai chai (green tea) they serve is awesome, as is the salad dressing on the house salad (though they could use a bit less). I still think the sushi is really darn good, and that's even after living in Japan for a year. - Monika , posted 01/21/07

"Best restaurant in the city"
I've enjoyed Sushi restaurants for 20 years, and this is the place where the Japanese frequent, if that doesn't speak volumes, you simply have to see and taste for yourself!
Kensan has had that restaurant for over 25 years, he's doing something right, it's located next door to New Sagaya's on Old Seward Highway. Be sure to try his special homemade salad dressing, and the Yamato Ya Special Roll! - Saudi , posted 01/15/06
